Response to "Scene Unity" (Matt Rees of Pvrenchymv)

We were reading your rant about unity and had a couple of comments.

You've probably noticed that most people (especially musicians) can't get their own shit together, let alone organize an event involving multiple people who can't get their shit together. You seem to have a talent for this. You also seem to have a passion for it. Whenever we feel that were about to be left behind by a new band, a new scene, or a new fad, we've discovered that this "great new thing" usually dies on its own and rather quickly. The reason, we believe, is that 95% of people starting things don't have the necessary talent or passion to make it succeed. It's easy to start something. It's hard to keep it growing. For most, it's just too much work.

I agree that we need to rally around one really good organizer and help push in one solid direction. But don't worry about all the dickheads starting their own zines or rebelling against what you've created. They'll find out how much work it is, and in the end, have to give up or make nice with you. (Besides, I don't think you really want to share editing rights with other people. It's hard to find talented people who share your vision.)

Your zine is great. It's established. You're miles ahead of any newbie sites. By looking at your zine, it appears you're pretty much married to it and it takes all your time. Whatever competition is headed your way, don't worry about it. First, they have to have your talent. Second, they have to earn your experience (did you say you've done some 600 reviews?). And third, they have to be able to sustain your focus. This combination is not going to happen often. And if and when it does, those people will respect you and be willing to work with you.

So keep doing what you're doing. You're appreciated. And we'll help pick up the beer cans.
