Imagine if Glenn Danzig and the singer from Queens of the Stone Age had a very upbeat son. Now, this son is the lead singer for SideCho Records’ own Death on Wednesday. Keep in mind that this son gains the best attributes from both individuals, losing the pretensiousness of QOTSA’s singer, while still having some of the impressive range of Glenn Danzig and the backing vocals of individuals that seem like perfect replacement for those members currently in the Misfits. Such is the premise of the incredibly groovy Misfits-influenced album S6ngs to _____ to. “Born to Bleed” is simply the Misfits with a head cold; lighter and with a bassline that actually drives the song instead of spastically following the guitar at every conceivable moment. By “Falling”, the third track on S6ngs, one can definitely hear the effects of Ferris Bueller’s buddy (the uncle of the Danzig/QOTSA spawn) on the voice of Nathan. Brief flashes of Deep Blue Something (specifically, Breakfast at Tiffany’s era) rear their head during the most low-key track on the entire disc, “Sympathy”. Again changing up their style, the final track of the disc (“Wait for Love”) still has Nathan’s memorable vocals but with much different time signatures than the prior tracks. Also, “Wait for Love” incorporates more of an indie rock feel to a track that still has no problem with rocking out. All and all, a band is refreshing in the playing of rock tracks, and byrock I simply mean something more encompassing of their musical influences than punk or indie might be.
